CU- Benson Earth Science Building

Cobb Mechanical Contractors, in conjunction with PCL Construction Services, coordinated and constructed The Benson Earth Sciences Building at the University of Colorado at Boulder on time, within budget and meeting every expectation of the University. Opened in 1999, this 87,000 square foot building houses the Geological Sciences and the Jerry Crail Johnson Earth Sciences and Map Library. It has five levels, including the basement. The building features a three story stone atrium with a glass roof and contains the 11,000 square foot library, departmental offices, a 175 seat centrally scheduled classroom, a large lecture hall, faculty offices and laboratories.

PROJECT SPECIFICATIONS

The project was a coordination challenge due to the lack of on-site material storage, causing all equipment to be installed immediately after delivery. There were eleven separate piping systems including deionized water, acid waste, gas, heating and chilled water, compressed air, steam, condensate, storm, domestic water and sanitary water. The HVAC included a chiller, an air cooled condenser, wash-down ductwork, heat recovery coils, reheat coils and three VAW Systems Inc. custom aluminum air handling units.
